Youth Opportunities

Volunteer Teacher Aid: 

Description: Volunteers help GBYM teaching artists lead class. 

Volunteer slots are between 5pm and 7:30pm, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and between 11am and 1:30pm on Saturdays. 

Only HS juniors and seniors are eligible. 

Spanish or Amharic language skills are welcome but not required.

Beginner knowledge of filmmaking required.

Interest in filmmaking, coaching and tutoring is a must. 

 Opportunity eligible for SSL hours.

Summer DOCS 2023!

First day to apply: January 4, 2023  Paid positions will be filled on a rolling basis, so first come, first served.

Last day to apply: June 1, 2023. 

Program is July 11 through August 11, 2023.  Must be available for the complete program.

Eligible: Students grade 8 through 12 with advanced beginner or intermediate level filmmaking experience.

Media and Fine Arts Classes

Work together on our current film projects with excellent film teachers. 

Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 5:30 to 7pm

Saturdays, 11am - 12:30pm and 12noon to 1:30pm

Classes are for middle and high school students.

MCPS students are eligible to request Student Service Learning (volunteer) hours.

 Sign up to talk with a small group of youth volunteers or guest teach a specific topic. We invite speakers in numerous fields of expertise or experience.

  • Numerous human rights topics

  • Equitable housing and real estate law/history of redlining and covenants

Fall 2023 Teaching Artist - Film class

Tuesdays, 5:30pm to 7pm 

September 13 through December 7, 2022

900 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring, MD 

Experienced professionals in motion graphics, filmmaking, or animation are encouraged to apply. Sign up to teach one or more 4-week sessions. 

Students are middle and high school students. 

Class is free to all students.

Valid state-issued ID, background check, and proof of vaccination required before starting work.  (Must be available from 5pm to 7:30pm)

Guest Teacher

Guest Speaker

We are booking experienced filmmakers, from creators to post editors, to guest teach a small group of film students, or to be interviewed on camera. The students choose the questions and topics for an interview.

Schedule: Bookings are between 5:30pm and 7:30pm, Tuesdays and Wednesdays

and between 12noon and 1:30pm on Saturdays

Dates: Fall semester is September 13, 2022 through early December 2022. 

Location: Our studio at 900 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring,, MD 

Who: 15 to 20 students in our media arts classes 

Compensation is $100 for a one-hour engagement.
