Youth Opportunities

Coach Younger Volunteers: 

Description: Volunteers coach other youth participating in GBYM classes or projects. 

Volunteer slots are between 4pm and 7pm. Position is in person only.

Only HS juniors and seniors are eligible. 

Spanish or Amharic language skills are desirable but not required.

Knowledge of digital media software is helpful.

Interest in coaching and tutoring is a must.

NOTE on health and safety precautions: 

Masks and social distancing are required in the media arts studio. 

All adults (18+) working in the studio must be fully vaccinated. 

The Studio is large (3000 sq feet) which allows for adequate distancing.

Teach Small, Beginner Workshops: 

Positions available for students and recent students who want to teach filmmaking workshops.

Pay is $40 for each class worked. Classes are 1 to 1.5 hours each.

Position is in person only. Workshops will typically feature two to three class sessions over three weeks. 

 

Students must have either post-high school training or college classes in film, and experience in two or more of the following to qualify:

scriptwriting, pre-production research, storyboards, basic DSLRs, Canva Video tools, Adobe Spark, Adobe Creative Cloud, Final Cut Pro, and/or sound editing softwares in order to qualify. Workshops will be in one of these areas, or two complementing areas. 

 

Opportunities are on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, ranging from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Student teachers will work alongside the classroom mentor to teach each workshop.  These opportunities are open now for dates in the Winter/Spring Semester 2022.

How to Donate your Time and Expertise at GB Youth Media 

Contact Anna MacLachlan at anna@youthmediamd.org to ask questions or to schedule your volunteering. 

Time slots are available Mondays through Thursdays, at 5pm. 

Zoom or in person at our Silver Spring studio. 

 

Visit or teach our youth filmmakers for 30 minutes or one hour.

  • Social justice activists

  • Numerous human rights topics

  • Small business owners 

  • Equitable housing and real estate law/history of redlining and covenants

Experienced Professional Volunteers

Guest Teacher

Guest Speaker

We are booking experienced filmmakers, from creators to post editors, to guest teach a small group of youth volunteers, or be interviewed by a small group. 

Schedule: Bookings are between 4:30pm and 6:30pm, Monday through Thursday

Location: Zoom or our studio at 900 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring,, MD 

Who: 8 to 12 youth volunteers from local middle and high schools who joined GBYM to produce short films.

Workshop Teaching Artist

Pay is $300 for each workshop. Workshops are typically three 1-hour sessions over three weeks.

Position is in person only. Workshops are for small groups of 8 to 12 youth volunteers, age 12 through 18. 

 

We are seeking experienced teaching artists to offer workshops in one or more of the following skills:
